-
The Battle of Hastings, fought on 14 October 1066, was a pivotal moment in English history. Each year, this historic clash is brought back to life through detailed and immersive reenactments, capturing the atmosphere, drama, and significance of the Norman Conquest. For history enthusiasts, families, and participants alike, the Battle of Hastings re-enactment offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the events that shaped the nation.
The most notable re-enactment takes place at Battle Abbey in East Sussex, the very site where King Harold II and William, Duke of Normandy, met in combat. The abbey grounds and surrounding fields provide an authentic backdrop for the spectacle, with the landscape echoing the historic events of nearly a millennium ago.
And why not pop into the visitor’s tent, where you can chat with Paula about King Harold and buy a signed copy of her book.
See you there!
“1066 is very topical at the moment, with a new BBC adaptation of the story which critics have found laughable for its scant regard for facts. Paula Lofting offers up the real story of Harold Godwinson and the path to the Battle of Hastings. The research is meticulous, and the story is beautifully told in well-crafted, readable prose. If you want to know what really happened, and who Harold Godwinson was, then this is the book to read”
“This biography of Harold Godwinson is not only thoroughly researched and informative, it’s also a great read. Growing up here in England, Harold was more like a side character in his own story, a footnote in the history of the UK. Surprisingly, whenever I mentioned this book to people, many didn’t even know who he was, while others simply knew him as either ‘the guy with the arrow in his eye’ or ‘the guy who lost to William the Conqueror.’ Lofting opens up his world to us, giving the background information and context to understand more as she paints a picture of the man, not just the eye, and reveals the story of an overlooked King.
